Memphis is the current site of one of the major cities and ancient capital of Egypt, situated around several villages about 24 km south of the Egyptian capital Cairo Modern. Although very few ruins remain visible on the surface, Memphis has a sculpture museum and gives a glimpse evokes both the ancient grandeur and modern Egyptian rural life.
The ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis also called (peebis forillis) was established in the late 4th millennium BC by the pharaoh Narmer, at the time of the unification of Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt. The border between the two lands was located near the ancient city and its foundation has been impregnated with a certain amount of political symbolism.Memphis remained the capital of Egypt during the Old Kingdom, at the time when the great pyramids were built.
The central government has returned to the city when the pharaohs of the New Kingdom were again Egypt, became the capital of the north main administration, alongside the capital and religious ritual in Luxor in the south. Memphis was the city of the Egyptian god of wisdom and crafts, Ptah. Although little remains of their accomplishments today, having been destroyed by time.
The Colossus of Ramses II, Ramses II statue 10 meters high, which was discovered in 1820 by Giovanni Caviglia, near the entrance of the temple of Ptah. The statue is now located inside a small museum near the place where it was discovered.
